Story

Ao Bing is the mirror image of Ne Zha. Where Ne Zha was born from the Demon Orb and shunned by society, Ao Bing was born from the Spirit Pearl — pure, destined for greatness, and carrying the hopes of an entire race on his shoulders.

Shen Gongbao stole the Spirit Pearl and delivered it to the Dragon King of the East Sea, who infused it into a dragon egg. Ao Bing hatched not as a demon outcast, but as the dragons' best hope for freedom. The Dragon Clan had been confined to the ocean floor by the Heavenly Court for eons, treated as jailers rather than honored beings. Ao Bing was their ticket out — if he proved himself worthy, the dragons might finally be released.

Raised by Shen Gongbao, Ao Bing was taught to be disciplined, obedient, and ruthless when necessary. But underneath the cold exterior, he was lonely — just like Ne Zha. Their meeting, fighting a water yaksha together, was the first time either had connected with someone who understood them.

The Choice

At Ne Zha's birthday party, Ao Bing faced an impossible choice: follow his clan's orders and destroy Chentang Pass to prove the dragons' worth, or protect his only friend. He initially chose duty — summoning a massive ice formation to crush the town. But when the heavenly curse descended on Ne Zha, Ao Bing abandoned the plan and joined his friend against the lightning.

Together, the Spirit Pearl and Demon Orb — opposites that were never meant to coexist — combined their power to survive. Ao Bing sacrificed his physical form in the process, his spirit later carried within Ne Zha.

Personality

Ao Bing is reserved, elegant, and conflicted. He carries himself with the grace of a prince but the weight of a sacrifice. He's torn between loyalty to his clan and his own moral compass. His arc mirrors Ne Zha's: both are defined by what others decided they should be, and both ultimately choose to define themselves.

Mythological Origins

In the original Investiture of the Gods, Ao Bing is a minor character — the third son of the Dragon King whom Nezha kills (and then de-tendons) after Ao Bing attacks him for disturbing the sea. The 2019 film completely reimagines him as a sympathetic deuteragonist and Ne Zha's only true friend. This is arguably the film's most significant creative departure from the source material.
